As September comes to an end, China is preparing for two important holidays: the Mid-Autumn Festival and China National Day.

In 2026, the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday runs from September 25 to 27, followed by the National Day holiday from October 1 to 7.

What Is the Mid-Autumn Festival?

It falls on the 15th day of the eighth month of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar. The festival has a long history and is strongly associated with the full moon, family reunion and the harvest season.

The full moon is traditionally associated with completeness and reunion. That is why the Mid-Autumn Festival has become an important occasion for families to gather, enjoy a meal together and appreciate the moon.

Mooncakes and Family Reunion

One of the most recognizable traditions of the festival is eating mooncakes.

Mooncakes are round pastries traditionally shared among family members and friends. Their round shape is commonly associated with reunion and togetherness. Other popular Mid-Autumn traditions include appreciating the full moon, enjoying seasonal foods and, in some places, carrying or displaying lanterns.

National Day is marked across the country with public celebrations, travel, family gatherings and festive decorations.

In 2026, the National Day holiday runs from October 1 to October 7.
